Signs your gutters need cleaning
You can spot most clogs from the ground, often during or right after a rain.
Water spills over the edge
If water pours over the front of a gutter during a steady rain, something is blocking it. The clog is often at the downspout opening.
Little water from the downspout
A downspout that barely trickles in a heavy rain is likely clogged, or the gutter above it is.
Plants along the roof edge
Weeds, grass or tree seedlings in the gutter mean wet debris has sat there long enough to turn into soil.
Sagging or pulling away
Packed leaves and standing water are heavy. A run that bows or pulls away from the fascia may be carrying weight it wasn’t built for.
Stains, peeling paint or washed-out beds
Streaks on the siding, peeling paint on the fascia, or a worn strip of soil or mulch under the roof edge all point to water spilling where it shouldn’t.
Standing water, nests or pests
Water that sits in the gutter for days after a rain, bird nests, or mosquitoes around the roof edge mean the gutter isn’t draining.

What a proper gutter cleaning includes
A full cleaning clears leaves, twigs, needles, shingle grit and packed dirt out of every gutter run on the house, not only the sections you can see from the yard.
The downspouts should be cleared and flushed so water runs freely from the gutter to the ground. Some companies include this in the base price, and others charge extra to clear a downspout that’s clogged.
The debris has to go somewhere. Some companies bag it and haul it away, and others leave it for you to get rid of, so ask which one you’re paying for.
Many companies also run water through the gutters and take a quick look for problems: loose hangers, leaking seams, sagging runs and gutters that don’t drain toward the downspout. Small fixes like resetting a hanger are sometimes part of the job. Bigger repairs are usually quoted separately.
How often to clean your gutters
Most cost guides and gutter companies suggest cleaning at least twice a year: once in spring and once in late fall, after the leaves are down.
Trees decide the rest. A house with no trees nearby may only need one or two cleanings a year. A house under heavy tree cover can need more, and one cost guide suggests a cleaning every season for homes with lots of trees nearby.
Oaks, maples and other hardwoods drop most of their leaves in fall and early winter, so the cleaning after the last leaves come down does the most good. Many of them also shed flowers and seeds in spring, which is one reason for the spring cleaning.
Pine needles behave differently. They’re thin and mat together into a dense layer that slows water, and they can slip through or settle on some gutter guards. If you live under pines, look at the gutters between cleanings, especially after a windy storm.
Gutter guards cut down on cleaning but don’t end it. This Old House’s guide to guard upkeep says micro-mesh and reverse-curve guards still need cleaning about once a year, and foam or brush inserts two or three times a year.
Doing it yourself or hiring a company
Cleaning the gutters on a one-story house is a common do-it-yourself job if you’re steady on a ladder. You’ll need a sturdy ladder, gloves, a scoop or small trowel, a bucket or tarp for the debris, and a garden hose to flush the runs and check the downspouts.
The real risk is the ladder. A fall from a ladder can cause serious injuries, even from one story. Set it on firm, level ground, keep three points of contact, and move the ladder instead of leaning out to reach. Keep the ladder and yourself well away from power lines, don’t lean it against a sagging gutter, and skip the job when the roof is wet or icy or the wind is up.
Hiring makes more sense on two-story and taller homes, steep roofs, gutters with guards that have to come off, or any time you’d rather not be on a ladder. If you don’t already own a tall ladder and the tools, buying them can cost as much as a professional cleaning, or more.
What to ask before you hire
Ask for a written quote that says what’s included: every gutter run, every downspout flushed, debris bagged and hauled off, and roof debris if you want it cleared.
Ask whether clearing a clogged downspout costs extra, and how they handle gutter guards if you have them.
Ask for photos of any problems they find, like loose hangers, leaking seams or soft fascia, so you can see the problem yourself before you agree to a repair.
Ask for proof of liability insurance before anyone climbs a ladder at your house. SirGutters lists companies from their own websites and doesn’t check licenses or insurance.
If you want regular cleanings, ask about a yearly plan. Many companies offer maintenance plans or discounts for repeat customers. Fall and early spring are their busiest seasons, and some charge more then, so booking early can help.

Common gutter cleaning questions
Plain answers to what homeowners ask before they hire anyone.
Call (478) 606‑6430How much does gutter cleaning cost?
Most single cleanings fall within the typical-visit range in the table above, which comes from national cost guides. Taller homes, longer runs, steep roofs and heavy clogs cost more. Get at least two written quotes that list the same work.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least twice a year for most homes, in spring and again after the leaves drop in fall. Homes under heavy tree cover, and especially under pines, may need it more often. Gutters with guards usually need it less often, but they still need it.
How long does a gutter cleaning take?
On an average home, a professional cleaning usually takes between half an hour and an hour, according to This Old House’s cost guide. Large homes, steep roofs and badly clogged gutters take longer.
If I have gutter guards, do I still need gutter cleaning?
Yes, though less often. Guards keep out most leaves, but pine needles, seeds and shingle grit still collect on or under them. How often depends on the type: fine mesh styles need the least cleaning, and foam or brush inserts need the most.
Is downspout cleaning included?
It depends on the company. Some include flushing the downspouts in the base price, and others charge extra to clear one that’s clogged. Ask before work starts, and check that every downspout runs clear when the job is done.
Should I clean my gutters before or after the leaves fall?
After most of them are down. A cleaning in early fall can fill back up within weeks if your trees are still dropping leaves. If your trees drop late, a second visit near the end of fall may be worth it.
How does SirGutters choose which companies to list?
We list companies whose own website says they do the work, and each listing shows when we last checked. A listing isn’t a recommendation, and SirGutters doesn’t check licenses or insurance, so ask for proof of insurance before work starts. Companies can ask us to update or remove their listing.
